Fuel Assistance Program (FAP)

The federally funded Fuel Assistance Program assists qualified households with winter heating and energy costs. While Fuel Assistance is not an emergency service, the program may help households who have qualified for assistance to obtain an emergency delivery of fuel or to prevent a utility shut-off. Benefits are calculated according to a standard federal formula that is based on household income, energy costs, number of heating days in the region served, and housing type. Renters who have heat included in their rent may also qualify for fuel assistance.

Apply July 1 - August 30

Fuel Assistance benefits for qualified households are not available until the season opens on December 1.

Emergency Applications

Apply for emergency low-fuel/no-fuel assistance during the program’s open season, from December 1 – April 30.

Participating Electric Assistance Program (EAP) utility companies:

July 1

Households with children under the age of 6, disabled, and/or elderly, or households that heat with wood (wood pellets) may apply.

December 1

Program opens and payments on behalf of qualified households begin to be dispersed to fuel vendors.

September 1

All other households may apply.

April 30

The last day to apply for the current year’s program.
